In Arizona, an alternative business structure (ABS) is a licensed legal services business that includes nonlawyers with an ownership interest or significant decision-making authority in the firm’s operations.
Arizona is the first and only state to eliminate the rule prohibiting nonlawyer ownership and control in law firms, replacing it with a licensing framework that requires appropriate supervision of nonlawyers, compliance with the ABS Code of Conduct, and adherence to the Arizona Rules of Professional Conduct.
